(PRWEB) April 18, 2004--Schizophrenia, Bipolar Disease, Obsessive-Compulsive Disease, and Depression have been on the rise in this country for over fifty years. There are effective treatments to resolve these problems quickly and with lasting effect. These disorders, which are characterized as mental illness, are often the result of an individual’s greater need for vitamins or minerals than the average person. When the necessary nutrients are provided, the mind functions normally. On Thursday, April 22, 2004, 8:00 PM Eastern, 5:00 PM Pacific, Brad Weeks, M.D. and Horace Simmons will discuss the treatment of these conditions without drugs on the webcast talk show “On the Path to Health, Your Mind is Key”. Dr. Weeks is a physician who has been involved for years in the orthomolecular treatment of many illnesses, and will provide an overview of the field of study and the treatments.
Schizophrenia has been successfully treated with high doses of vitamin B-3 and vitamin C since the 1950s. The research and the results have been published since the 60s, but the treatment has not found favor in many circles. Nonetheless, those who have used this approach have an overall success rate of over 80%. When used near the onset of the problem, results are nearly 100% effective.
Bipolar disease has, in the last 5 years, been reversed by significantly increasing the intake of omega-3 oils (fish oils and flaxseed oil). The imbalance of omega-3 to omega-6 essential fatty acids (EFAs) has been shown to be a significant factor in those who are susceptible to excess omega-6 (grain oils). The shift to grain-fed beef, and the use of corn oil, cottonseed oil, etc, has greatly shifted the historic 1:1 ratio to 1:15 or 1:20. This imbalance has numerous effects, some of which show up in mental functioning.
Obsessive-Compulsive Disease (OCD) is being successfully treated with inositol at a Harvard teaching hospital. Published reports of its successful use have been available since at least 1996.
Depression can have many roots, and there are many natural treatments that have reversed the symptoms. Vitamin B-3, B-6, inositol, omega-3 oils, and various minerals are used to reverse the problem without use of drugs. The studies that report these effects go back to the 60s.
Many disorders characterized as mental illness are actually symptoms of vitamin deficiencies in those individuals with genetically based need for higher intakes than the average person.
