Well Monsanto sure is having a heck of a time lately. Glyphosate is now being charged with affecting bacteria which promotes resistances to common antibiotics. This comes just short of when it was charged with being carcinogenic.
Yeah, worst week ever? Well, they always seem to land on their feet due to stellar marketing via paid scientist and most people just not understanding the GMO situation (hint, share this, folks).
Today, a study is detailing that Glyphosate, the main ingredient in Monsanto’s Round Up, is creating antibiotic resistance. (source | asm.com). The study finds that exposure to this and a few other Round Up herbicides is changing the way bacteria responds to a number of antibiotics, including, ampicillin, ciprofloxacin and tetracycline. Pretty much our main line of antibiotics.
“What makes our study different, is that it is looking at a sub-lethal effect,” says Jack Heinemann, professor of genetics at the University of Canterbury in New Zealand. “The effect we see requires that the bacteria stay alive.”
This isn’t the first study to find issues with Round Up herbicides; it is, however, the latest and most glaring to date. So when will we take action? Spread the word, folks.
